Alan Kelly, Non-Executive Chairman

Alan Kelly served 35 years as a top leader in ExxonMobil, a Fortune 5 corporation. His visionary leadership, both as a corporate executive and director of international operating companies, promoted operational excellence and catalyzed the organization to deliver world-class business results. He accomplished  this through his exceptional people skills and cosmopolitan style, developing world-class talent, aligning teams, and employing learnings in behavioral science.  A veteran of major merger integrations and business unit turnarounds, Alan is adept at leading others to achieve breakthrough performance levels.

At ExxonMobil, Alan served as a Corporate Vice President and as President of the Fuels, Lubricants & Specialties Marketing Company, leading a $160+ billion global portfolio and dramatically growing sales, revenue, and profits. He oversaw the seamless merger of two global operations while relocating the organization. Prior, he was President of Lubricants and Petroleum Specialties, where he led a global cluster of businesses and brands with industry-leading sales and earnings, while refocusing on the Indian and Chinese markets.

Earlier in his ExxonMobil career, Alan directed or managed global supply/logistics, North America lubricants, and retail marketing. As General Manager of Corporate Planning, he coordinated an annual Corporate Plan and Worldwide Energy Outlook, a long view of global supply-and-demand energy trends.

On assignment to the National Petroleum Council, he was project lead to research/produce a USDOE report, Facing the Hard Truths about Energy, a comprehensive view to 2030 of global oil and natural gas.

Alan began his career at Mobil Oil Company, serving 17 years until it merged to form ExxonMobil in 1999. He held leadership roles in London, Rotterdam, and Tokyo. In each role he achieved improved sales, profits, or cost reduction.

For his next season, Alan is enthusiastic about teaching—his chance to “give back”- and was appointed Adjunct Professor of Practice at Wake Forest  Business School in 2017. His passion for education, entrepreneurship, and developing talent drives him to share his expertise in marketing management, business strategy, global business perspective, talent development, coaching, team development, and financial acumen, using valuable case studies.

He has prior experience teaching senior executives and collaborated in training design with Columbia University. He is a clear communicator, skilled in simplifying complex topics with analogy and metaphor, which helps learners from varied cultures and languages. His integrity, inclusiveness, relaxed style, empathetic listening, humor, and crisp British articulation engage and build trust with students.

Alan is Chairman of the Board of Visitors at Wake Forest University Business School, on the Worldwide Board of Junior Achievement (Marketing Committee  Head and Member), a member of the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs, and a member and former Marketing Committee Head of the Wolf Trap National  Park for the Performing Arts. He is a former board member of Yokohama International School.

Alan earned an Honors Degree from Bristol University in the UK, was a Graduate Trainee in Accounting and Economics with Reckitt and Colman, and pursued further studies at Columbia University Business School, Thunderbird University, and the University of Michigan.

Alan has dual citizenship in the UK and USA and enjoys working in varied cultures and languages. He is fluent in French, competent in German and Dutch, and knows basic Japanese. He and his wife Carol take pride in their family life with three adult children, and maintain residences in Breckenridge, CO,  Alexandria, VA and London. His manifold interests include education, entrepreneurship, sports, travel, outdoor activities, singing/songwriting, and the arts.
